Grenada Makes a Comeback

Grenada, often referred to a Spice Island, is in the midst of attempting a comeback. Located 100 miles north of Venezuela, Grenada is known for two things - civil unrest and undeveloped beauty. Unfortunately, a great deal of the island suffered after being hit four years ago by Hurricane Ivan.
The island, just 12 x 21 miles in area, is going through a lot of changes, some of which are brought on by people who realize the growth potential in real estate and tourism. Neighboring islands make millions each year from visitors and expats - why shouldn’t Grenada?
Recently real estate developer Peter de Savary began to live out a dream he’d had since childhood. Savary put nearly £300m toward the rejuvenation of Grenada, with the hopes of creating a world-class port to rival those in St. Barts and St. Tropez. When completed, the new focal point will be Port Louis.
Maritime moguls and investors Camper and Nicholson have already invested $24 million into the development.
While this home to 100,000 people is beautiful, with pristine white sands and azure waters, it also has a dark history. During a particularly volatile time in the 17th century, the last of the Caribbean settlers jumped to their deaths from what is now referred to as Leapers Hill.
In addition to offering spectacular views, Fort George also shows visitors bullet holes in its walls from the 1983 coup in which military and political officers were executed.
Perhaps the violent history has done Grenada a favor in some ways, now that its land is still mostly undeveloped and there is less crime than the neighboring regions.
