Cape Verde Calls to Brits

October 3, 2008 by Ray Lester

Cape Verde has long been a hot spot for Britons on holiday. It’s no wonder. The Cape offers pristine sands, an azure sea, tropical breezes and breathtaking scenery. Still, many are asking why Brits should invest in property on the Cape when the Caribbean seems to be the top attraction when it comes to investing money. The answer is simple. Cape Verde is closer, easier to get to, and travelers won’t waste a day or two combating jet lag.

Paul Collins, the property editor of overseas investor portal BuyAssociation, insists there’s more than that to attract those interested in real estate, including the convenience of obtaining euro mortgages from banks on the island.

He said: “Being a former Portuguese colony they retain quite strong links and that’s always going to be an incentive,” adding that this link is relevant beyond simply the sharing of a language with one European country: “The mortgage system is going to be similar to that in Europe which is going to be a great advantage to people when they are buying overseas.”

Common language is also a factor in choosing a holiday home or investment property. And again, it’s all about location, location, location.

“It [Cape Verde] does have a certain element of what the Caribbean is about; beautiful blue seas, fantastic weather for most of the time and quite a low cost living. Because of the low living cost people can retire there and collect their UK pension and live much more cheaply.”

This article clearly highlights the many advantages that Cape Verde offers in terms of property investment versus the Caribbean but I still do not know if I am sold on the area. The Caribbean region is still very attractive to me as it is so much more popular than Cape Verde is. It seems like it would be easier to find renters for the property.

My biggest concern is the lack of direct flights that go from the UK to Cape Verde. I do not think such a thing exists. I can think of better places to invest that offer far greater travel accommodations. Budapest has great property opportunities and you can get there in half the time.

Well in terms of Cape Verde versus the Caribbean region, Cape Verde is still much closer to get to although I am such there are many more flight options that will get you to the Caribbean. With that being said there are more flight options for a reason. More people head that way so like R Ferguson said it is probably easier to find renters for your property.

Is it just the way that I am reading this or is it saying that people in Cape Verde speak English? I was under the impression that they spoke Portuguese. I mean they were under Portuguese rule until the 1970s it seems unlikely that they have all started to speak English since then.

I believe there are some people that do speak English in Cape Verde but most still speak Portuguese. I think this article is just saying to be aware of language barriers not that they speak English in Cape Verde. For me, that is a major barrier to investing in the area although I do think it’s a decent spot to vacation at.
